International Day of Action for Rivers

Anmol is a campaigner who goes to educational institutions like schools to raise awareness about specific days or events. Every year, on March 14th, the International Day of Action for the River is observed. So for that, he has come to VPS High School to raise awareness about this International Day. Anmol does not only give speeches; he has interesting ways to make people aware. For example, he tells the students to ask their questions one by one, and in the end, they get the answer to the related topic, which they are unlikely to forget.

“Good morning, everyone,” Anmol says, addressing students in the school assembly. “You all know why we are gathered here. It’s International Day of Action for Rivers on March 14, 2024.“.

All students listen attentively.

Anmol: This day shows how important rivers are in our lives. Every day, two million tons of sewage, industrial, and agricultural waste go into the world’s waterways. If we compare this weight to the human population, it would be equivalent to 6.8 billion people. Which is a very serious thing. So the International Day of Action for Rivers makes people aware of such issues. And direct our attention towards how we, humans, are polluting these natural sources of fresh water. We are proceeding with a question-and-answer session.

One student raises his hand and asks, “Why did this day come on March 14?” and “What is so special about this day?”

Anmol: Good question. The first international meeting of people affected by dams was held in Curitiba, Brazil, in March 1997. In this meeting, representatives from more than 20 countries participated. The representatives of the meeting came together and adopted the International Day of Action Against Dams and forRivers, Water, and Life. During this meeting, The International Day of Action for Rivers was established. They chose the 14th of March as it coincided with Brazil’s Day of Action Against Large Dams.

Another student raises her hand and asks “But why action against dams? , I mean I have heard that dams are important.”

Anmol: Yes, you are right. dams have positive aspects as well as negative aspects. Rivers are important for communities because they provide water for drinking and other important needs. But when people build too many dams near rivers, throw trash and release harmful factory chemicals in the river then rivers get polluted. Which is harmful to people and animals who rely on the rivers. So, The International Day of Action for Rivers is a day to remind everyone to take care of rivers.

“Most days, like this one, have a new theme every year”. “Is there any theme for The International Day of Action for Rivers 2024?”. Another student asks.

Anmol: Yes, there is. The theme for The International Day of Action for Rivers 2024 is “water for all”. which shows the global challenge we face regarding water. The idea of the theme is clear water is essential for life and everyone should have access to it. it does not matter whether it’s communities fighting for fair access to water or dealing with pollution from dams or the debate around private ownership of water sources. This theme includes all of this.

“So, how can we contribute to this?” asked a few students collectively.

Anmol: people from all over the world contribute to this day by doing several activities like river clean-ups. So we are going to do the same. There is a river within walking distance. So, we will all go to clean it. Sounds good?

“Yes,” everyone says together.
